French Corner: Alsace (December 2015)

Welcome to the "French Corner", the Consulate’monthly rendez-vous dedicated to the promotion of France’s culture and patrimony in video! In December, discover Alsace, known to be magical at Christmas time!

Green plateaux, wooded mountains and picturesque villages, together with a unique Franco-German culture, make this the most appealing of destinations. Cities such as Strasbourg, Colmar or Mulhouse have much to offer visitors, and there is a wonderful variety of local white wines and cuisine to enjoy. A clever mix of German and French cultures is marked in the Alsacian countryside, making it a great destination for enthusiasts of stones loaded with history!

The region is also known to be enchanting at Christmas time with the Great Christmas Markets organized all around the region, from Colmar to Strasbourg. This tradition is 446 years old, and grew up as the Protestant replaced the Catholic Saint Nicholas Market by the "Christkindelsmärik", market of the Child Jesus.
Strasbourg Christmas Market is, by no doubt, the oldest of France and was awarded with "Best Christmas Market" by European Best Destination in 2014 and 2015.
